TITLE: Swept Away

RATING: R

COUNTRY: Italy

DIRECTOR: Lina W

YEAR: 1974

LANGUAGE: Italian w/ Englsih subtitles

RUNNING TIME: 119 minutes

Director Lina Wertmuller’s black comedy about the conflicts of social class begins with a group of wealthy people on a yacht enjoying a relaxing Mediterranean cruise which ends in a shipwreck. The only two survivors -one a pampered, blonde-haired Northern Italian woman, the other an uneducated Sicilian deckhand- find themselves marooned upon a deserted island. The two initially assume their accustomed class relationship, she expecting to be served, and he resentfuly serving her-until a realization of their circumstances results a power shift and a roller coaster ride of unbridled, raw emotion. Swept Away, not to be confused with the 2002 version of the same name starring Madonna, is a must-see cult classic and a crowd pleasing favorite of foreign film festivals of the 1970’s.
